What is the true definition of love ?
I would like to start this article with one of my favorite quotations by D. H. Lawrence:
“Love is the flower of life, and blossoms unexpectedly
and without law, and must be plucked where it is found,
and enjoyed for the brief hour of its duration.”
Dictionaries include different meanings for that word. But when I consider it, my mind conjures images of lots of beautiful things that i have always related to love. Flowers, candle light meals, chocolates, soft toys, hearts, clothes and fragrances, (I do hope I haven’t forgotten anything) these would be the words that have grown to be synonymous with love… but, what about the actual feelings and emotions related to it?
I remember growing up with stars in my eyes and love related songs ringing within my ears. Slowly my desires grew bigger and then I started expecting my Prince Charming to arive and carry me with him to some beautiful land where we’d be surrounded by lots of servants, good clothes, flowers and diamonds. One day I realized the reality about love… that it was a lot more than material conveniences and gains.
Love is Giving
Believe me as i say it! This is among the most important elements of love. It is crucial to open ones heart and share : your happiness, your fears, your sorrows, your victories… everything, it really doesn’t matter, as long as the heart is crystal clear. Love is getting honest and knowing that your partner feels the in an identical way too, it is giving and losing ones inhibitions and understanding that the person on the other side will never become judgmental.
Love is Discussing
Yes, love is speaking. It is concerning discussing, telling and revealing. After some time people restrict their own conversations to talking about bills, children and domestic pets. This is the sure indicator of things going the wrong way. Bring the interest back by starting up a conversation. Talking can aid solve matters that otherwise may cause misunderstandings. Another aspect of this is listening. Talking is useless if your partner is not hearing. Learn to pay attention too.
Love is Hanging out Together
A few moments spent together daily keeps the monotony away. I just created this right this moment, but it is really because I feel there’s nothing like time dedicated to a relationship… believe me, it pays! Heavy work schedule consumes much effort and time, so it is essential to get things into perspective. Spending time together will let you understand your partner better, help you learn about them better. And I think that it gives the relation a new feel.
Love is Confidence
When you love a person, you have to be able to trust them. Love without trust just isn’t possible. When you open up your heart to someone, you have to trust them to deal with it, forever. Trust means you have the confidence in your partner that they can keep their promises, be faithful and stay there for you always.
Love is Faithfulness
To love means to be true, to love unconditionally is to give with your entire heart to a single person, and just one. Being faithful within a relationship is essential, in love… it is the second thing after trust. Love is if you realize that your partner is the best thing that has happened for you and you need to cherish that person as well as the moments spent ogether, till death will do you part.
Love is Being Friends
Love is being friends with one another. Enjoying simple pleasures in life like shopping, catching a movie or watching watching tv at home, apart from tons of other stuff that “Friends” normally carry out! You have to tell them your deep secrets and keep theirs, be there for each other, and respect and trust one another.
And, as clichéd as this might sound… Love is looking together in the same direction, having the identical goals and taking steps in the same direction to make sure they come true.
